New field does not appear on Jira open issues screen

Jira Software Server 8.0.

I create a basic software development project.
I add a multi select field called severity to the field configuration.
I add the severity field to the default issue screen.
The severity field appears on the create issue screen.
The severity field does not appear on the open issues screen.
What step am I leaving out?

If it's what I'm thinking, you need to add it as a displayable column to your view.

Did you add a value to the severity custom field?

JIRA would only show you a custom field that has a value in the issue view.

Let me know the answer to the above.
