No 'Create sub-task' present in the 'More' menu of a story

Tanya Moldovan September 6, 2018

Hi,

I cannot find the option of creating a subtask for a story.

I am following this guide in order to enable sub-tasks:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver072/configuring-sub-tasks-828788265.html

I have enabled sub-tasks, created sub-task issue type and it's present in my issue type scheme.

It's also part of my project's issues types:

However, I cannot find the option `Create subtask` in the desired story.
When I click the 3 dots in the right side, I get this menu: [Add flag,  Move, Clone, Delete, Configure]

When I click the 3 dots near the icons `Link issue` and `Add attachments` I get only `Add More` which leads me to the marketplace (which has some PAID sub-task relaed add-ons).

The only option I found is to create a new issue of `Sub Task` type and then link it to the parent issue, but it's too complicated for just adding some subtasks to a story.

What am I doing wrong?

Where is that `Create subtask` option?

Please help,
Tanya

As @toffee mentioned, if choosing Kanban classic the option is available.

To solve my problem I've created a new project using that template and moved all the issues there.

Same problem. Is it related to free trial version?

No, trials are limited only by time.

It looks to me like the "new issue view" is the problem here, as it does not contain sub-task creation links like the old view.

toffee September 12, 2018

I try to turn off "new issue view".

The old view still does not contain sub-task

Ok, that's even more simple - you don't have any sub-task types in this project's issue type scheme.

toffee September 13, 2018

I have sub-task issue type in "Default Issue Type Scheme" same as the topic owner.

Should I create a new scheme?
How to assign "Issue Type Scheme" to a specific project?

I was created project with new template, so may not work.

I think I should go with the classic template.

So if I create a Kanban (Classic) it works. But why doesn't it work it Kanban project? How are we supposed to know the difference and why it is not documented?

And now what do I do with my existing project to make it work?

Because you have not selected a project type that has sub-tasks by default.  All you should need to do is add one or more sub-task types into the issue type scheme.

I did add it - as described in the original question (check the screenshots). Everything is enabled according to the guide, but the option is not there

Have you enabled sub-tasks in the issue type scheme, or project settings if it's a Next-gen project?

Jonathan August 5, 2020

Hi, thanks for answering.

I just solved it now by looking into the project settings as you suggested and adding a new issue type of subtask.(didn't try that before, cuz there is alrdy a subtaskサブタスク in Japanese) Once I clicked "+ Add issue type" and added a subtask in English, the one on the bottom, I could start using child issues. I can now see the "add child issues" button on the top row of tickets.

I didn't create the project, so I think it might be something not configured properly by the creator.

Thanks for the help, jira is great :)

Hi, Tanya.

The documentation you looking at is for Jira server. Below is the documentation for Jira cloud:

Hi,  Thank you for your reply.

Tanya Moldovan September 8, 2018

I have  checked the guide.I have everything enabled, I have the needed sub-task issue type, I still don't see the option.

Tanya Moldovan September 8, 2018

This guide:  https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirasoftwarecloud/creating-issues-and-sub-tasks-764478439.html

says that:  Quick add buttons: Add attachments, subtasks, linked issues, and content from Attlasian Marketplace apps.

Tanya Moldovan September 8, 2018

Anything related to subtask is paid add-on.

Tanya Moldovan September 8, 2018

Am I missing something or this is how it's supposed to work (aka do I need to pay for this feature to be available)?

Thanks

Tanya Moldovan September 8, 2018

P.S.: sorry for not replying in one comment, but Jira kept giving me the error `Your message was not accepted. Check for invalid HTML or try reposting as plain text.`

Hi, Tanya.

The issue is because of the type of project that you created rather than your specific access. You selected the "Agility" project type rather than a "Software" project type.

You can find more details on this here:

You would likely want to create a Scrum project or a Kanban project as sub-tasks are not supported in Agility projects.

At the same time,

Linked below follows a screen recording showing how to create sub-tasks using the new Jira issue view:

Further details about the new issue view you can find in the below documentation:
