Not able to assign a user to an issue all of a sudden, no changes were made

Romy Haik November 26, 2019

Hi JIRA community,

As of a few hours ago, I was able to assign (and so did others) a specific user. Mid-day we have encountered an issue where none of the users are able to assign issues to that specific user (reference "John").

I have asked John to sign out, and then sign in again, but that did not help. Important to say - he is able to assign issues to himself and others, but we cannot assign issues to John, nor do we see him in the assignee suggestion/auto-complete. Not even when writing his full name.

No changes were made in permissions, we are a relatively small team (8). I am the only administrator for the projects.

I have also checked Assignable User permissions etc., they are all fine.

Thanks in advance!

Romy

Hi Romy,

First of all, welcome in the Atlassian Community. It is good to have you here.

My first reflex when facing issues which could be permissions' related is to use the Permission Helper. So, I would advise you to use it in order to be completely sure that it is not an issue with the permissions.

I hope this will help.

Boris thank you for the reply!

I have checked the permissions helper, John has permissions to be assigned to issues. The permission helper didn't show any errors or problems that may cause this problem.

@Boris MBOUMEHANG

I've also just noticed that I am not able to tag John in comments (with "@").

Hi Romy,

Thanks for your answer. Regarding your last comment, do you mean you are not able to tag John in comments of the issues of the same Jira project, or from issues of all the Jira projects you are member of?

Thanks
Boris

Boris, thank you for the quick reply.

John and I are in the same project. He was able to be assigned and tagged 2 days ago. I’m not able to either tag him in comments, nor assign issues to him.

Ive tried giving John administrator permissions and adding him to the admins group, as well as completely removing him and re-inviting him to the JIRA. Nothing seems to work

Romy,

If some users are not able to mention other users, generally it is because they do not have the global permission Browse users and groups (see Managing global permissions for details).

Did you check this to ensure that the group of users who need to mention have this permission?

Boris,

For the sake of testing, I have added all of us as "Site Admins". Still no option to tag John, or assign issues to him.

Romy,

Unfortunately, being a "Site Admin" does not ensure you that you will be able to be the adminisrator of all the Atlassian products. That's why I wanted you to check Jira project permissions and Jira Global permissions in my last comment.

This you check the last one?

Boris

Adding John to Site Admins, and "Trusted Users" group should do it.

As you can see here, all of the groups are permitted under this category.

@Boris MBOUMEHANG

We are able to assign and tag John again all of a sudden. We haven't made any changes. Possibly a JIRA bug?

I have opened a support ticket to JIRA support, but have yet received a response. Perhaps they looked into it and fixed it?

Leaving this open so that people can perhaps chime in on this if they encountered it.

Romy,

That's strange in fact! So, happy to see that everything works now.

Of course, you are right in your will to keep the ticket opened, so that Atlassian could see if something specific happened during this time.
