No automatic email notifications are being received by project staff. When I do a test send from the administration mail page, it generates an error
535 5.7.8 Error: need authentication from <IP Address of our mail gateway> #SMTP#
It seems the email is being sent in the email name of the user when it should be sent from something that ends in atlassian.com
Any ideas?

Probably easiest to raise a support request in the OnDemand project at http://support.atlassian.com - it seems like the sort of issue that we can help with.
For the record this turned out to be that there was no notification scheme associated with the project. OnDemand comes that way, to avoid spamming people.
