I was wondering if I can have splintered permissions between our users and our devs without explicitly setting up user groups for it.

I have groups for our users but no groups for our developers and we want our users to not be able to edit issues.

Is there a way to do this? The jira-software-users tag didn't seem to work for this.

Hi @Jesse Powell,

I'd suggest creating a project role for your developers. Then edit your permission scheme and associate the "edit issues" permission with the developers project role only.

I am afraid I don't understand the difference between a group and a project role.

Or at least I don't as far as configuring them.

Is there a link to documentation that would explain it?

A group is a global configuration that will affect all projects in Jira Software.

A project role is specific to a project and will not affect other projects. Project roles are normally used when you're trying to make a change that is specific to a project.

In this case, you will have to determine whether you would like developers to only edit issues in all projects in Jira software or only a hand full of projects.
