Hi All,
Is there a way we can create a project template and use it for multiple projects. I am using Deep Cloning for Jira, but struggling with how to keep the projects separate. If I am making any change to one of the cloned projects then that change appears in all the projects cloned from the template.
Thanks for your help!
Hi @SPARC - It depends on the type of project. You can't do it for Service Desk or Next-gen projects but you sort of can with Classic projects. You can create the "template" project and then when you create new projects, base them on the "template" project.
We have already created a template project. We want to copy & paste the sprints and issues as a new project. We have used Deep Cloning for JIRA, but all the projects are connected. If we are making any change to the cloned project then the parent project also reflects the same changes.
Please let us know if you know how to solve the issue.
Thanks a lot!

So you don't need to create new projects, you just want to duplicate or move the existing issues/sprints to other projects? I am a little confused at what you are trying to do exactly.

If you have two projects - project A and project B and you want to move issues from A to B.
1. Create a filter for Project A, something like:
Project = ABC
2. Do a bulk change by clicking on the 3 dot menu to the upper right.
3. Choose all of the issues and select Next
4. Choose Move
5. Follow the rest of the prompts.

Ok, now I can move the issues and sprints from project A to B, but I want to keep the issues both in Project A & B. How to achieve that?
Thanks for your help!

You cannot have an issue that exists in two projects at the same time. You can create boards that show issues from two separate projects with a filter like:
Project in (ABC, DEF)
But an issue can only be physically attached to a single project.

Hi @SPARC , hi @John Funk ,
I'm the product manager of Deep Clone for Jira.
With our app you can clone and move the issues to another project in one go. So the original issues should be in the original project. And the cloned issues should be in the target project.
Note: Deep Clone doesn't create a new sprint, when you select "sprint" in the bulk clone dialog.
If that is the problem that you experience, I recommend to create the correct sprints in the target project first. You can "bulk edit" the issues while cloning to put the clones into the desired sprint.

Hi @SPARC ,
Do you experience this issue when cloning with Deep Clone for Jira?
If yes, can you report it to our support? I've already tried to reproduce the issue on our instance, but wasn't able to.
Thank you, @SPARC !

Hi @John Funk
We want to use ‘Next-gen software projects’ based off a template plus having the ability to update those ‘Next-gen software projects’ with more tasks in a bulk method.
All our projects will be 100% the same we want to use Jira track onboarding new customers and on-going changes across all our existing customers.
My thought is I set up a Next-gen software project with all the tasks etc, but how do I then make a new project from that "template" and how do we update all existing projects with new tasks?

Hi Jono,
You can't copy Next-gen projects from a "template" like you can with Classic Software or Jira Service Desk projects. The closest you will be able to come is to create an Automation For Jira rule to automatically create the tasks when the new project is created. But you will have to create all of the project level related fields, permissions, etc. manually.

I have a template created and is in Trello. I am trying to copy it so I can save the original for future use. Any Ideas. Do I need to upgrade?

Hello, you may take a look at Gaia for Jira app which saves the template in a separate file. This avoids mistakenly change the reference template project. You may update it as much as you want.

You don't need it!
With the app you may use Jira alone to create projects with template issues, or combine with Confluence to both create the Jira project, Issues and the Confluence space & template pages!
