Hello,
I'd like to have some input on the best way to manage two level estimations for IT projects in JIRA.
Context:
- cross applications business projects
- shared resources
- development via subtasks
- tests via XRay
- agile objects (Epics, Story)
When using the agile objects with Epics and Stories, the estimation via native fields is done on these objects. But, one object like a Story goes through analysis, development and test. With 3 possible actors involved. In my project I'd like to estimate the effort needed in each of these 3 domains so that I can reserve the necessary resources.
At the moment I am using some custom fields on the Story object like "BA effort", "Dev effort" and "Test effort". These are high level estimations. Then BA then does a second (more precise) estimation on the Story once it is well defined, Dev the same on Subtasks and Testers the same on Tests.
I'd like to know if anybody has a better approach.
You could try evaluating the Tracking & Estimation fir Jira app from the marketplace. The only thing is that it's not compatible with Tempo. Other than that, it's a great app!
Thank you Tanya!
Interesting app. This addresses part of my problem. If I understand correctly however it does not address the two phases estimation (macro estimation and detailed estimation).

Hi Gianni Pucciani,
Correct me if I don't understand the process completely, but if you do go over the story and re-estimate it after it's better defined, than the first estimation is meaningless and can be potentially deleted. You can use a post function on a specific transition to clear the existing estimation and let the BA/Dev/Test redefine it on their specific roles, as defined by Tracking & Estimation fir Jira. The total effort of all the roles will be automatically summarized and displayed at the story level Time Tracking fields.
Cheers,
Tanya

Hello Tanya,
I understand what you mean. For us the point of keeping the first estimation is to collect reports on their accuracy.
Cheers,
Gianni
