I know this has been answered 100s of times already, however, after spending 4 hours searching for a solution (from permissions, to billings, to workflows) I'm still not able to add a status.
The sprint board shows columns of our old work flow, when I go to Board Settings, I can see the columns for our new work flow, however there is a note in each of the new columns saying "This column will not show on the board without a status" and there is not 'Add status' button.
I'm pretty sure I've checked every permission and made myself the admin of everything, please advise.

This is not case of permission.
Please check your workflow which associate with your project and make changes in it, means add status in it that want in Board, after doing this you can see the status in board also and then you make assign that status to column.

Goodness, adding a status literally just means dragging one of the statuses from the rightmost column to a new column.
I think I got it, now back to undoing all the changes I made trying to get this to work.
