Any option to suppress the account ID on User Mentions (with the changes done in May 2019)?

Naga Rajan May 30, 2019

With the set of changes done by Atlassian in JIRA around end of May 2019, any user mentions (on author mode) will display *not only* the full user name but also the lengthy account ID as well, like:

[John Smith|~accountid:12345-abcde-54321]

which is annoying (even though on read mode, it displays only the user name).

Users in small or mid-sized companies, in my opinion, do not need this lengthy, unfriendly, unreadable names while selecting a user name.

Is there any way (option) to switch to the old (easy) way of just displaying the full user name?    Thanks.

Hi Naga,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!
Due to GDPR, usernames were removed for users and customers to protect their information if someday you need to delete them from the instance.
If the user or customer is active, when you mention them and save the comment, it will show the full name they added on id.atlassian.com. It's not possible to switch back.
You can find more details on the documentation below:

Thanks Angelica. I understand what caused it for Atlassian to do it.

I think I am missing something here. I am still puzzled as to how this is effective.

Meaning, we used to see user names while specifying @ user mentions (on Write mode) and see the user names on published comments.

Now also, it is showing the user names on the published comments. The only difference is that it displays the added account ID on Write mode. The comment author, most likely, may not know / remember / recognize the Atlassian account ID of everyone he/she is mentioning there and so, does not add any value in displaying that to the comment author in Write mode.

Perhaps, some back-end storage information on this might have changed.

If you can, kindly shed some light on this to understand it better.  Thank you.

Hi Naga, I was able to check that this is happening only when using the old view that uses wiki markup editor. The new issue view that uses markdown, it will show only the full name when you mention someone.
It will take a while because there are a lot of features missing, but in the future, Jira will only use the new issue view and the mentions will work as expected the same that it's now.
Please, test the mention in the new view and let us know how it goes.

Just want to give an update that it was reported as a bug but it was fixed. Please let us know if you are still facing the issue: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-72195

Thank you so much for your quick and positive reply.  That is truly a great news. Since many, I assume, have not transitioned to new issue view and online collaboration is critical for the success of any project through JIRA, I am glad that this got resolved.  Thanks again.

Hi @Angélica Luz , hope you don't  mind me asking here as I have a related question. While on new issue view what I notice is when I mention someone I see their name come up but when I post the comment the name changes to just a user id, (not name and user id). I was under the impression we would be seeing both or am I mistaken?

Thanks.

Hi @Pall,

I tried to replicate the issue, but it worked normally.
Would it be possible to send us a screenshot of the issue?
What type of project are you using? Are you mentioning an internal user or a customer?

The expected behaviour is to show only the full name after posting the comment. On the bug mentioned above, on the old view, it was showing full name + id and the notification was not being sent.

Angélica

Hi @Angélica Luz , pls find screenshot here https://bit.ly/2KqemJx

We only use mentions for internal users.

Thanks,

Pall

Thank you for the screenshot. Is this a classic project?
If so, it must be related to the renderer of the field. Go to the Project settings > Fields > Screenshot 2019-06-19_11-06-22.png> Search for the Comment field > Renderers and change it to Wiki Style Renderer.
Please, give it a try and let us know how it goes.
