Hi @Jeff Murray ,

So I am trying to better understand your goal here. What to you hope to achieve? How will the dat be used? Obviously comparing one epic against another would be very difficult given all the variables. Maybe you are looking for something different?

in any event let me offer the following ideas:

  • tracking # of days for Epic - you can use the created date or likely better the date an epic moves to in progress as the start and then use the resolved date for the completion. With that in mind, you could then create an automation rule that would calculate the number of days between those two dates and store that in a custom field within the epic or maybe just a comment if you don't need to query the results. I would offer the following KB article that could be used to accomplish this. While the article focuses on time in status it can easily be extended to achieve your goal. Basically, one rule records entering In progress and the next rule triggers on a transition to Done
  • track # sprints - if you capture each sprint within the Epic you could use Automation to get the size of the field when the epic moves to Done. You could leverage the previous rule that triggers to done. you can use the smart value list.size to get this info if I recall correctly.

Hi @Jack Brickey

May i ask you your advice as i have similar ask with Jeff's request. I am new with jira. Appreciate your guidance as I need to make an automation to create a Sprint Epic for each future Sprint 4 weeks ahead.  Each sprint is 2 weeks duration (starting 1 Jan 2024 and end 14 jan 2024 as the 1st Sprint Week 01 2024 then 15 jan 2024 till 28 jan 2024 as our 2nd Sprint Week 03 2024).

The query is similar to the initial but i just need to do the creation (no need automation for closure or tracking). I understand from other post to use the Send web request Action, but i do not understand how to get the details for the https field, the header part and how/where to know "originBoardId" details within my project.

Hello @Jeff Murray

Do you want to know how many days it took an epic to go from To-Do to Closed? There is no straight forward way to get this info OOTB.

You can either look for third party add-ons which do this for you, OR, you set up automation rule which start tracking when Epic transitions from initial stage to next stage and when Epic ends in terminal stage, capture these dates in unused field/issue entity and find the difference that way. You doing this yourself is a go forward solution. Finally, with any approach, Sprints to complete is tough to implement because of unknowns on your sprint schedule and when sprint starts /ends.

Personally, I think its easiest is to evaluate third party add-ons so you can focus on productivity.
