Can I add a link of a custom defined Issue type to an issue screen?

henk aarts October 12, 2022

We want to track our non-conformities in our company different compared to the regular development issues. For this we've created a NC Epic with its own workflow. But now we would like to be able to link a regular Jira issue to an NC Epic issue. Like you can link an regular Epic to a regular Jira Story. So that you know the NC Epic as its parent.

Is this possible to create in Jira?

Yes and no.

If you have created a new Epic level (using the hierarchy feature for advanced roadmaps), then you can connect any issue to that using the custom field Parent Link that comes with advanced roadmaps.

If you don't have this, then you can't connect the issues in this way because the new issuetype would still be on the same hierarchical level as a Story.

Depending on your setup it would probably be easier to create a new issuetype called NC that you use instead of a Story, or what issuetype you use for your work. Just make it have the same workflow and it should be exactly the same as the story, just visually different and possible to filter.

You can also add a custom field for it and just have a simple checkbox for filtering purposes.

This way you can also create a separate Jira project that filter the issues you want and then you can manage the issues there with components or even Epics as long as it does not conflict with the work projects since you can only have one Epic connected.

Thank you very much for the feedback. We don't have advanced roadmaps. Our idea is that we use an NC Epic type with a workflow typically for an issue (new, analyzing, solving, implementing, Closed) and for the development team use the stories below this with the workflow they are used to (ToDo, InProgress, blocked, review, done).

The hierarchy would help in this for the built-in features of the hiearchy. Like showing the parent in the Scrumboards, fast clicking to its parent etc.

We'll have to re-think our strategy.

Hello @henk aarts

Are you using Jira Cloud or Jira Server/Data Center?

Can you provide more information about how that NC Epic issue type was created?

The built in Jira functionality does not allow you to make additional custom issue types that function the same way as the built in Epic issue, so I suspect when you created the NC Epic issue type it was created as a Standard issue type, like Story. If that is the case then the answer is no, you can't link Story issues to the NC Epic in the same way that Story issues get linked to the built in Epic issue type.

Thank you very much for the feedback. We are moving to Jira cloud in very short notice.
