I added a field called Developer so that I can keep the workflow going the same way I have it, this way I can always tell who was the developer assigned to the issue as the assignee changes based on the statuses. Ideally, when an issue changes status from Ready for Dev to In Progress the Developer field (custom) will have the name of the user that moved the issue to the in-progress status. It will be amazing if I could do this without a paid add-on.
Thank you
Hello Ernesto!
I have something similar setup to where anyone who transitions an issue to "In Development" automatically becomes the Assignee (via Post function on the transition).
I believe you should be able to add a post-function to your transition from "Ready for Dev" to "In Progress" similar to the attached screenshot: (selecting the option to copy value from one field to another")
In this case, you're telling it that once it transitions, to copy the value of the "Assignee" field to the "Developer field (custom)" (if it's a user picker field, I assume?).
I think you can also order when this would occur in the post function as well (so if you were doing an auto-assign, you could have this post function occur after the auto assign.
Hope this helps.
Thank you ...I do not have that option. I should have specified that I am using Jira Server version 8.2.3

Ah yes, my solution only works in Jira Cloud.
I think you should have an option in Jira Server still to add a post function to the transition (although it would need to be scripted).
The accepted answer on this post does almost what you're looking for, if you'd like to reference that? Sorry I can't help much when it comes to Jira Server.
