Can I prevent stories from changing rank when status changes?

At the beginning of each sprint we order (rank) our stories from most to least important. Then as the sprint progresses we like to view the stories in this initial rank to discuss progress.

The problem we are having is that when a story is moved to a different status Jira is changing the rank on the story so we lose our initial ranking.

Is there a way to prevent Jira from changing the rank of stories during status updates? Or is there a better way to accomplish what we are trying to do?

Hi Jonathan

When you say that the ranking is being changed when changing the status, I am assuming that you mean when you move the issue on a board to a new column. To prevent this from happening for everyone, you would need to change the permission "Schedule Issue" in the permission scheme to only allow an individual/group/project role. You should limit this permission to perhaps a project admin, or a product owner/scrum master, this way they are they only ones that can impact the Rank.

Let me know if that helps!

Yes. While viewing my sprint dashboard when a ticket is moved from one column (status) to the next the rank is changed on the story. I do not want the rank to change, just the status to indicate progress.

I will test out your suggestion.

Hi Jonathan,

When you move a card from one column to the next, it will stay in rank relation to the other cards that exist in the column already. It's fairly complicated how it does not, but just because the card was at the top of the previous column when you moved it, it will rarely be the top card in the succeeding columns (assuming there are cards in the columns).
