Can't Restrict Editing and Viewing of a Dashboard to the Same Group?

While working with a user today on their dashboard in our Jira Cloud instance, I noticed some strange behavior:

  1. Go to the "Rename or Share" panel on a dashboard.
  2. Add a group to the "view" permissions section so that only members of this group can view the board.
  3. Try to set the same group below in the "editor" section.

Expected Behavior:

Viewing and editing of the dashboard is restricted to the same group of people.

Actual Behavior:

  • The board's editing permissions are set to the group, while the "view" permissions are set to "Private".
  • Trying to set both back to the same group puts a red box around the lower "edit" permissions, although no error message appears.

Is this a feature I am not understanding or a bug?

Hi @Haddon Fisher 

In my view, this is just an "undocumented feature", albeit a confusing one:

The edit permissions supersede the view ones...preventing setting the same group/user/etc. to both.  That is: if you can edit you can view the dashboard.

I looked in the public backlog and was surprised this wasn't already raised as a defect.

They wouldn't take it as a bug, but they did at least put it on JAC as a feature request. Guess I'll check back in a decade or two!
