Can't add rule to check for estimate

Thomas Henshell March 2, 2022

I want to enforce tasks moved to In Progress have an estimate.
I assumed I could add a workflow rule to ensure the number is filled out.

I cannot.  I can't see a way to ensure the field is filled out as part of the rule.

Hi Thomas,

The {{fieldChange}} smart value which is set by the Field value changed trigger contains the following fields:

  • field
  • fieldType
  • from
  • fromString
  • to
  • toString

In the case of the Time tracking field, the field item will contain one of:

  • timeestimate
  • timeoriginalestimate

You can use these values in an Advanced compare condition to discover which time tracking field was changed as seen in the below image:

Please give it a try and let me know if it helps.

Where are you suggesting I do this?

I tried adding a rule, no way to do it.
I tried adding a transition between In Progress and Done and no way to do it.

I'm on the free plan right now.

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for your patience on this.

When you say that you tried adding a transition, did you try to add a Condition to the transition?

Assuming that you are using the Story Points field to estimate, I would recommend performing the following steps:

  1. Edit your workflow and the transition to the "In Progress" status

  2. Use the condition "Value Field"

  3. Add a condition that the Story Points field has a number higher than 0

By doing this, when a user uses this transition it will have the condition that the Story points field has a value higher than 0, otherwise, the user won't be able to transition the issue.

Please give it a try and let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Carlos

I don't have the same options as you.  I thought Jira was Jira.

Here is what I see:

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for the images, it was really helpful.

You are using a team-managed project, while my example was with a company-managed project.

In a team-managed project, you need to first activate the Estimation. To activate it, please perform the following actions:

  1. Go to Project Settings Features
  2. Look for Estimation and activate it.

After that go back to your rules and then you will be able to add the Story Points Estimation field there:

Please give it a try and let me know how it goes.

Thanks for continuing to assist, I do appreciate it!

I did have estimation turned on, but for days/weeks not story points.
This is my preference as that is how we work.

That's why I was trying to ensure the person put in an effort estimate (days/weeks) before starting the task.  But you can see from the screenshot it doesn't list it as an option for me.
