Can't configure a board

Those new to the Atlassian Community have posted less than three times. Give them a warm welcome!
To start with, I'm a complete novice with Jira.
When I try to configure my board I'm shown only one board option 'Columns and statuses'.
Where can I find other options like swimlanes, card colours and layout etc.?
