Can we customize the types of linked issues per project?

https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRASERVER-16325

Looks like there was a plugin they were looking tom ake to do this so I suspect that the answer is no, not out of the box.

We have a lot of issue types and on some projects they only use a handful of them and one of the PM's would like to just limit it to what he needs. I don't think this is possible, or at least I'm not finding the documentation to prove otherwise.

Am I missing something?

Hello @Gregory Muir

I'm not sure if I am understanding your question.

You mention "types of linked issues" in your post title, but in the post content you mention "issue types"

If you are indeed looking a limiting type of issue links that can be used in a project, then that is currently not possible with native functionality.

I also note that you have flagged your post as the Cloud deployment type, so you may want to watch the corresponding issue for Jira Cloud rather than the one for Jira Server.

@Trudy Claspill I'll try rewording.

https://oursite.atlassian.net/secure/admin/ViewLinkTypes!default.jspa

So if we go to the view link types we see the common names here.

Blocks

Clones

Duplicate

etc.

We have a ton of types and the PM wants to know if he could limit what shows on his project to just a subset of all the possible types. I don't think it's possible.

I linked that other issue just as an example. It's very old but I couldn't find if that sort of thing had gone native in Jira yet.

Thank you for confirming the topic is customizing the available issue link types per project.

You are correct. That is not natively available at this time.

There are some third party apps that impact issue linking, but I haven't investigated to see if any of them enhance it so that you could customize which issue link types are available per project.

Any chance this will be fixed / changed in the near future?

The most common link type I use is "Relates To." For some reason this is at the very bottom of the dropdown list.

Recently, additional link types (i.e. link options) were included in the dropdown. Now I commonly have difficulty selecting "Relates to," which makes linking much harder than it used to be.

When I select the Linked issues drop down, a scroll appears. However, the bottom of the scroll is cut off, and often I can't drag the scroll all the way to the bottom. That means I can't select "relates to."

If the dropdown is long enough to be cut off, then a vertical scrollbar appears at right. (See "dynamic scroll that pops up" in the image below.) However, if I grab that scrollbar to slide down, the "Linked issues" dropdown collapses.

I only use a few types of issues: blocks, is blocked by, relates to, and (very rarely) duplicates. I'd like to have the option to remove all other types of links. It's too intrusive to see this whole long list every time.

(Hick's law also suggests to me there are too many choices.)

Hello @Gary Bartos

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

There is a change request about this here:

https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-16325

Given that it has been open for almost 15 years, and the last official Atlassian update was in 2015, my guess is this is not going to be addressed any time soon.

@Gary Bartosthe list that appears in the drop down for link types is actually sorted alphabetically by the name of the link type (which doesn't appear here but in the settings).

As a workaround, you can rename the "Relates" link type to something like 1. Relates and it will sort to the top of the list and you'll see it as the first option.

This is done in Jira cloud by:

  1. Hit the gear icon in the top right to open the settings menu
  2. Choose "Issues"
  3. In the left side navigation scroll down and choose "Issue Linking"
  4. Find "relates" in the list
  5. Click edit on the right
  6. Change the name
  7. Hit the "Update" button

Hope this helps you a little.

All the best,

Drew
