Can you assign ideas to contributors in Jira Product Discovery?

Tim Kannenberg February 26, 2024

We've using the Jira Product Discovery (Free plan), and it looks like I can only assign ideas to full licensed JPD users.  We have other licensed Jira Software users who are in the JPD contributors group, but none of those people show up in the Assignee selection dropdown.  Is there a way to assign an idea to someone who has contributor access but is not a full licensed JPD user?

Hi @Tim Kannenberg

Contributors can only access your project in read-only mode and contribute using the enabled features: creating ideas, adding comments, insights, votes or reactions.
What do you want these people to do once you've Assigned an Idea to them?
If they just need to brainstorm and research stuff outside the PD Prioritisation, then  I would suggest to link/create a Delivery ticket to the idea.

That way, the Contributors will have a task in their Sprint to work on the Idea and it will not fall off their radar, and you will see the progress of their work in PD.
If you need them to contribute to prioritisation, e.g. (create, edit, assign, transition, link, merge, archive), then they need to be a licensed user.
Hope this helps, let me know if this is somewhat applicable to your use case or not and why!

I do already have Delivery tickets linked to the ideas, and those tickets can be assigned to the appropriate people with no problem.  I was just hoping to be able to add the assignee field to some of my JPD views as a way of showing who currently "owns" the idea.

Turns out I can accomplish this using a custom field of the People type.

Thanks for your input!

Yep if it's just for reporting - custom field solution is perfect!

Hi @Tim Kannenberg,

That seems rather unlikely, if you ask me, since contributors are read onlu users with the following additional permissions:

creating ideas or adding comments, insights, votes, or reactions.

I haven't tried, but since they can't edit issues, I don't think that would make much sense.

Hope this helps!
