Cannot change Issue type/Need to hide issues from a board

Brandon Garrett May 12, 2025

Hi everyone,

I feel like this is a striaghtforward answer but despite feeling relatively experienced in Jira, I cannot seem to figrue this one out.

Main goal:
1) Have only Epics display on a certain board, and hide all Tasks that are nested under an EPIC

Because I was having trouble with this, I switched to a method where:
2) I would change all tasks to sub-tasks and all Epics to tasks, as an attempt for a workaround.

However, which I go to change the issue type I am only given "Task" and not "sub task"

This board is on a default scheme/screen.  I have noticed on other boards I am able to change issue types but it appears to be only within the same hierarchy.  As in, I cannot change a task to an Epic but I can change a task to a Bug.

Wondering if there is a clarification on whether this is intended behavior for #2 and if there is an elegant solution that doesnt involve a filter for #1

Hi @Brandon Garrett

Is there any reason for not using a filter?

The simplest solution would be to create a new board in the same project with a saved filter as the source:

Project = "MyProject" and IssueType = Epic

Hey,

Yeah, the board is basically meant for folks to go in there and be forced to only see the Epics until they click into them.

The users of the board would not be able to figure out how to use a filter as they are basically only there to put in their time.  Assume lowest common denominator here for users :) .  From an admin perspective, of course I know how to use a filter, but I just don't want the users of the board to make mistakes and I felt like there was too much room for error with all the tasks available.

For example, in the attached image I only want them to see San Ramon Epic until they click San Ramon Epic and then they can see the rest

In that case literally just save the filter I mentioned, make sure that everyone who needs to see the board has view access to the filter and change the board filter to use that filter.
