Change project issues default query

Is it possible to change the default query for on the Project > [My project] > Issues page? I can change it and hit Save, but it insists on my saving a new filter. I wouldn't mind doing that if I could get the page to use that filter, but when I leave and return to Project > Issues Project > [My project] > Issues page, it restores the default JQL.

Is this only available in the paid plan or something?

Hello @Craig Silver

Based on the screen image you provided it appears that you are referencing a Business (aka Work Management) type of project. It is not possible to change the default filter used by Issues tab.

I chose a "bugs" project type, if I recall. Is that a business/work management project type?

To determine the Type of the project go to the View All Projects page under the Projects menu. Find your project in the list. What does it say in the Type column?

Hi Trudy. The project type listed there is "Company-managed software". Is that what you referred to by a project type of "Business (aka Work Management)"?

Yes, that is the information I was seeking. And my assumption was wrong - yours is a Software project, not a Business project, based on what you found.

In my investigation of the Issues view associated with Software projects it appears that you cannot change the filter for that view on those projects either.

What is your use case for changing the filter used by that view? Perhaps we can suggest an alternative solution that doesn't require a third party app.

Thanks for checking, Trudy.

My use case isn't a big, important one, but it would be nice to access my favourite filter for a project by the menu's Projects > [My Project] link.

Alternatively, I can favourite a custom filter. Hannes' JXL for Jira gets me closer to what I want because with it, every filter acts like the Issues view from Projects, allowing me to edit ticket fields right from that view, plus a bunch more stuff from JXL, I imagine, like the upcoming feature, Automatic background data refresh.

Hi @Craig Silver

just to add to Trudy's great answer: If you're open to solutions from the Atlassian Marketplace, you may want to have a look at the app that my team and I are working on: JXL for Jira.

JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allows viewing, inline-editing, sorting, and filtering by all your issue fields, much like you’d do in e.g. Excel or Google Sheets. It also comes with a number of advanced features, including support for (configurable) issue hierarchies, issue grouping by any issue field(s), sum-ups, or conditional formatting.

Plus, as

  • every sheet is powered by a JQL query or a saved filter, and
  • you can create as many sheets as you want within your project,

you can easily create and return to specific sets of issues.

This is how it looks in action:

Any questions just let me know,

Best,

Hannes

Thanks, Hannes! I like the pricing model. It's just myself and a friend or two in my Jira instance. I'll let you know if I have questions about JXL for Jira. Is there a best place to do that, since this thread is very specific?

Hi Craig - perfect! JXL is free for 10 users or less. For any questions on JXL, the easiest is to reach out to us at https://support.jxl.app - we're always here to help. You may also want to have a look at our docs and our quick demo video, if you haven't yet.
