Child issues not showing up

Hi there, I'm having a weird issue. I've set up a new board, but when I add child issues to either Epics or Tasks, they initially show up, but if I click off the Epic or refresh the page, they disappear from the preview.

They still display in the Timeline (when it comes to tasks), but not in the preview:

No child issues.png

If I open the Epic or the Task directly in a new window, the child tasks are also hidden, so it's not limited just to the Timeline preview:

No child issues 2.png

If I add a new Task or Subtask, the list will display again:

No child issues 3.png

However, if I refresh or click off then back onto the Task, the child issues vanish. They're still present and can be searched for, but don't display on the parent ticket:

No child issues 4.png

It's only happening in new boards, though - I have two other boards, one on the same user, which is displaying normally:

Child issues 5.png

And another separate user account I use for work:

Child issues 6.png

These other boards both display fine, so I'm confused as to what the issue might be with this new board...

I've tried deleting and creating a new board, to see if it was a random issue, but this same issue occurs on any new software project board (team managed) I set up.

Hi @James Walters

welcome to the community,if child issues are not showing then there will be one of the following

Check Issue Type Hierarchy

  • Jira needs to recognize the parent-child relationship (like Epic → Story → Sub-task).
  • Go to:
Jira Settings → Issues → Issue Type Hierarchy

In the Issue View:

  • Open a parent issue (Story/Task) → check the “Child issues” panel.
    • If it’s missing, they might not be linked properly or are using the wrong issue type.

Make Sure Child Issues Are Actually Linked

  • Sub-tasks: Must be created as Sub-tasks, not just linked issues.
  • Stories under Epics: Must have the “Epic Link” field filled out.

Permissions Issues

  • You may not have access to the child issues due to:
    • Project permissions
    • Issue security levels

        Ask your Jira admin if:

  • You have Browse Projects permission
  • The issue has a Security Level that hides it from you

Hope this helps

Hi @James Walters

Is this company managed project or team managed project?

Try to enable child level issues in the board configuration>> Timelines by using below link.
