An industry standard for code snippets is using `these quotes` around some text. Jira kinda does this but not really (removing the first character of code), see my image. Also, there's two ways to insert a code snippet; the hotkey being the second one.

This issue that you are facing is related to a bug. I'm able to replicate the same on more than one Jira site, but it seems that it doesn't affect everyone.
Please, click on "This affects my team" and also watch to receive notifications.
I added a comment asking for an update and now let's wait a few days for them to answer.
