Consolidation of multiple JIRA and Confluence instances

SimratPal Singh October 7, 2018

Hello all, I am running a project where multiple JIRA and Confluence instances running across the globe will be consolidated in a single JIRA and Confluence instance each. Final instances of JIRA and Confluence will be data center versions and will run on cloud. I am doing the initial groundwork foe the same from the business analysis perspective, the implementation will be done by a technical team. Has anyone done something such? Any pointers, suggestions in this regard will be really helpful. To start with few things mentioned are what I am collating

  1. End points of all JIRA and Confluence instances.
  2. Versions of all JIRA and Confluence instances.
  3. Version of JIRA One and Confluence One (if already determined).
  4. Number of JIRA projects in each instance.
  5. Number of active and dormant projects.
  6. Identify projects can be archived (if any).
  7. Number of spaces in each Confluence instance.
  8. Number of active and archived spaces.
  9. Identify spaces those can be archived (if any).
  10. Number of users in each JIRA and Confluence Instance.
  11. Number of addons in each instance.
  12. Existing integrations of each instance.
  13. Whole technical stack of each instance like DB, infrastructure.
  14. Determine DB size for each instance.

Ok, it looks like you're doing roughly the right thing, but what are you actually asking for here?

@Nic Brough -Adaptavist- I intemd to ask if my approach is right and what else needs to be done from an initial analysis perspective?

I think the list you've given is a very good start, and the next step is to build an ordered list of what you need to do.  For example

  • Upgrade all Jira systems up to the highest version you currently have
  • Ensure all Confluence systems are on at least version 5.x (ideally 6.x though as that can save you some problems on merge)
  • Establish the final lists of add-ons
  • Establish target versions
  • etc
