Count number of child issues linked

Hope you're having a great day.

Is there a way of displaying the count of child issues linked to a parent Epic issue? 

I want our teams to filter by issuetype=epic and have a column with the number of child issues linked so we can prioritize which epics are "trending" more.

I understand I might have to create a custom field to count these, but it would need to be a field that would update every time I link a child account to an epic.

Any help would be great!
