Using the classic business project, is it possible to create a workflow step that doesn't show in the swimlanes? I wanted to create a workflow step of LOST, and be able to move issues into it that fell through. We don't need to see them (we can use a JQL query to find them if necessary) but I don't want to have another swimlane filling up the screen.
Business projects don't have swimlanes, so I assume you mean "columns".
The answer is no - the columns in business boards follow the workflow.
Ah yes. They had been called swimlanes to me when we started with Jira so that's how I was referring to them. Thanks for the clarification.
It does seem that the columns are fairly restrictive in how they are configured. A little more flexibility would be nice.

So my other thought was to possibly mark the issue somehow if "lost". I see that all finished issues have a green checkbox. Any idea if that icon can be changed based on certain criteria? If not then maybe I can automate adding text to the end of the issue name and add *LOST* to make them easy to identify.

Hi @Dennis_H
What does "lost" represent? Understanding that may help give you more ideas/options to consider.
Thanks, and best regards,
Bill

It would be a status of the issue. Right now I simply have it as a custom field (so I can at least do JQL queries on it), but ideally if a issue is considered lost I'd like it to go to finished but have a easily identifiable way to see that it's a "lost" issue.

Thanks for explaining that!
We do a similar thing with "abandoned" issues, where an issue moves to done and we mark a custom field for later reporting... And exclusion from board reports. For us, it is more of a disposition of done-ness, rather than a status by itself.
