That said, I'm a little bit lost here and would like to get your ideas on this...

Just stumbled into another hint: I tried to convert an existing issue to a subtask:
and it comes back with this outstanding message:
Where is the missing checkbox to acivate the subtasks...?!

That's it - the subtasks in general were disabled. Interesting that everything can be configured though the main-switch is disabled :)

try to check if the subtasks are activated in your Jira settings .
Go to Jira -> settings -> issues -> subtasks

Hi Assia, yes - the subtasks are active for the schema used in the project (SC-Issues Type Schema)
