Delete Custom Field: retroactive?

Probably being super OCD about this as deleting custom fields is covered in many posts. Nevertheless, I need to make super-duper sure that if I delete custom fields it won't impact existing/old cards. I only want to delete a field from new cards. Anyone?

Deleting a field will remove from all issues. Past and future. You can remove the field from the screens so that it isn’t seen.
