Disply Epic names from one project in backlog of another project

Michael Buchsbaum September 26, 2018

When viewing the backlog of one project (A), I can view stories from a different project (B). However, where stories in the current project (A) display the Epic name, those from the other project (B) do not display the Epic name when the Epic is in another project (B). Is there a way to make the Epic name display?

Hello Michael,

Can you please provide us a screenshot displaying where the Epic name is appearing exactly in Project A?

There are several places and possible features on JIRA board that can display Epics, I just need to see where is the place you are referring.

Thanks for the reply! I've attached an example. I'm looking at the backlog for the EAS3 project. All of the stories are EAS3. The first 6 belong to Epics that are also in the EAS3 project. The bottom 2 belong to Epics in another project, say EAS2 and you don't see the Epic name like the others. backlog.jpg

Hello Michael,

Thank you for your answer.

Testing the behavior you described, the Epics from different projects linked to my issues are properly displaying on my board. The Epic Testing Epic 2 is properly displayed on my board although it is from a different project (SD2), as you can see below:

That being said, I started to dig a little bit further and, finally, I was able to reproduce the same scenario as you when I removed my Browse Projects permission from the SD2 (The Epic's project).

That being said, I believe that you might be facing some related problem. Please, check the following details:

- Confirm that you are able to access the EPIC and you have the proper permissions (Browse Projects, View Development Tools, etc) and check one-by-one the permissions you are not added to confirm if it's blocking you.

- Confirm if the Epic is added with any security level and ensure that you are properly added to it.

- Confirm if any Global Permission is been blocking you

We will be waiting to know your results.

Thanks... permissions were good, but I think I finally stumbled across the problem. The filter query for the EAS3 Project/Board only included issues in the EAS3 Project. I found a way around that seems to work by creating a Board whose filter includes both the EAS3 and EAS2 projects. Then the Epic name shows up as you had.

The only real problem that presents for my scrum teams is that during their standup calls they use a Board just for their Project (say EAS3) and don't want to include items from another Project.

Hello Michael,

The filter I'm using only return issues from the project related to the board too, however, it still displays the Epic name on the board.

That being said, I believe that maybe your filter sharing or any other specific configuration of the filter can be blocking you from seeing the Epic links since it has been solved once you changed the filter.

I tried creating a new filter, sharing it with everyone and then created a new board, sharing it with everyone, using the projects, which are also shared with everyone and got the same result where the Epic names aren't showing up.

Not sure what else to try. It's not impeding our work, just an inconvenience to not see the names, but we can live with it.

Thanks for your help!
