Does JIRA have the ability to limit the number of sprints a story is assigned to?

Scott_Harman March 21, 2019

I have several user stories that are being assigned to more than one sprint. I am trying to determine if it is my developers assigning the story to more than one sprint because the work is not done, or if the system is automatically picking up any unfinished sprint not marked "done".

Hi @Scott_Harman ,

When a sprint is completed, the user has the ability to select where the incomplete issues are placed. They can be moved to the next sprint, a later sprint, or the backlog.

I'm not aware of any security settings that would prevent this; if the user can manage sprints then they are able to move the issues to another sprint.

I suspect that when the sprint is completed the user is clicking through without checking to see where the issues are going, and that the system is defaulting to the option selected when the previous sprint was completed. I haven;t tested this, but the next time you are ready to complete a sprint select the backlog for moving the issues and see if that changes the default next time.

Hope this helps,
