Does removing a custom field from a screen in a project, delete the associated data?

I want to remove some fields from use on a screen within a Jira project. Does removing the fields from the screen, delete the associated data? Or is the data retained? The fields will still be in use within other projects, I am not deleting the custom fields.

I need the existing data to be retained for audit purposes.
