Dynamic forms in Jira

Is there a plan for Jira to be able to have Dynamic forms like JSM where you have fields that are just created for the form and are not custom fields? I am not versed in the JSM form setup. My understanding is that you can create the fields for the form and they are not custom fields and are only stored on the forms. As a Jira Admin, I would like the ability to create a dynamic form for my various Jira Projects with conditions and drop downs that don't require custom fields and just reside on a form for the individual who picks up the request to view and figure out what is needed.

I did view this post https://community.atlassian.com/forums/Jira-questions/Dynamic-Forms-in-Software-Projects/qaq-p/3083133

I didn't see where I could have fields that weren't custom fields though maybe it's a setting.

Hello @Joni Johnson

The type of form options you have described are available natively only in Jira Service Management type projects which requires a subscription to Jira Service Management. That subscription is separate from a Jira subscription that provides functionality for Software and Business projects.

The post that you referenced asked about Dynamic forms for Software projects, but if you follow the documentation links in the Answer you will find that the forms functionality for Software projects is not the same as for JSM projects. It does not support creating fields that are only on the form. To add fields to a form you select from the fields that have been defined in Jira for the project.

@Trudy Claspill Thank you for sharing. You confirmed my understanding on the post I found. Would love to see this functionality to be native in Jira also.

You're welcome.

Atlassian has previously stated that they have no plans to port the more flexible Forms functionality of JSM for use in Jira.

Hi @Joni Johnson

I can clarify what's happening with JSM forms vs. Jira Software forms.

JSM Portal Forms:

You're correct that JSM has a feature called "Request Type Forms" where you can create form fields that are not custom fields. These are called "form-only fields" and they:

  • Only exist within the form itself
  • Are visible in the request details for agents
  • Don't create custom fields in your Jira instance
  • Help keep your field schema clean

This is specific to JSM and is designed for customer-facing intake workflows.

Jira Software/Core:

Unfortunately, Jira Software and Core do not currently support form-only fields. Any fields you create in issue forms must be custom fields that exist in your Jira instance. There's no native way to have dynamic, form-specific fields that only live on the form without being custom fields.

The post you referenced discusses dynamic/conditional forms (showing/hiding fields based on conditions), but those fields still need to be custom fields in Jira.

As of now, there's no announced plan to bring JSM-style form-only fields to Jira Software or Core projects, though it's a common feature request in the community.

You might want to check out Smart Forms for Jira (Marketplace app). It was built to solve exactly this gap in Jira Software.

With Smart Forms, you can:

  • Build dynamic forms with conditional logic, dropdowns, text fields, etc.

  • Create fields that only exist on the form — no Jira custom field required

  • Attach forms to Jira issues manually or automatically

  • Share forms externally (great for intake)

  • Update Jira fields after submission if needed

Basically, it brings the JSM-style form experience to any Jira project — including Jira Software — without cluttering your field scheme.
