Epic Colours only available for some Epics

Callum Long August 19, 2025

I've noticed that recently created Epics do not have the same option to change the Epic Colour ie the coloured box next to the title does not appear.

Is there any reason why this might be happening? Thanks

Hi @Callum Long

Similar to any other field, Epic Color can be added to a project's field scheme in Jira settings > issues > custom fields.

you can find more information about it here , https://support.atlassian.com/jira/kb/use-epic-color-for-epics-in-jira-cloud/

hi @sai krishna - thanks for replying! I believe I am on Jira Cloud but can't find the custom field this is describing. If I go into Project settings for my team-managed project, I have the option for Work Types (new Issues?) but my Epic does not an option epic color, and neither does the Fields section.

Do you think this is linked to 1) my Jira instance, 2) team managed project, 3) other?

Thanks again!

Hey @Callum Long , looks like Epic colour is available only for company managed projects. Team managed projects do not have this feature.
However, as a work around you can create a text based custom field and use it in JQL .

Sai krishna
