Epic drawer is blank.

Epic drawer is blank.  How do I get the epics I create to be displayed? The Epic tags are visible on the sprint board (I can search for them when I edit a story and assign the epic), but the Epic board is completely blank.

Hi @Ryan Johnson,

Most likely this is related to your board filter (check Board Settings > General and check what the filter behind your board is). It is very likely that your Epics are being excluded there, either because:

  • your epics are in a different project and the project is not included;
  • your filter explicitly searches for specific issue types and your epics are not included;
  • your filter excludes issues in certain statuses and accidentally that may also exclude your epics

Whatever the exact cause is, for your epics to be in the panel, they should also be retrieved by your board filter.

Hope this helps!

Hi Walter, I don't see anything as "Board Settings." I only see what I attached.

@Ryan Johnson

When you are looking at the board you should see in the upper right corner a button labeled "...". Click that button. That is where you should find Board Settings.

Trudy, can you show me a screenshot of what you're seeing. I don't think I have that.

Hi @Ryan Johnson,

The screenshot you shared in the thread with @Trudy Claspill shows you are in a server or data center version of Jira, not cloud.

But apart from that, everything we discussed above still applies. From that Boards link, as Trudy says, go to configure and then see what the filter is behind your board.

@Ryan Johnson

Can you provide some additional information?

You have tagged your post as Jira Cloud. Can you confirm that your Jira URL is something like:

https://<something>.atlassian.net

If your URL does not include .atlassian.net, you are not using Jira Cloud.

Based on the graphics in the image you shared I suspect that you are actually using Jira Server or Jira Data Center. Additionally, in some of your other posts you have said you are using Jira Server v8.10.0

In that case my screen images from Jira Cloud will not necessarily match what you see.

Can you please provide a full screen image of what you are seeing? Black out any confidential information.

What you would be looking for would be the button to the right of the "Create Sprint" button shown in this screen.

If you are on a Kanban board then you won't see the Create Sprint button, but you should still see the "..." button in the same area.

This page talks about board configuration options for Jira Server/Data Center

https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirasoftwareserver/configuring-a-board-938845252.html

If you are not an administrator for the board then your options may be limited, but I believe you should still be able to see the information of the board configuration even if you cannot change it.

What we need to find out is what Filter is being used to select issues to display on this board. A Board is a way to display and manipulate issues. The issues are actually stored in Projects. A Board is based on a Filter that specifies which issues to select. The Filter can specify a variety of criteria for selecting the issues to display.

Are the issues you are creating and the Epics you are assigning them to in the same project?

The criteria for your filter may be for only one project, and not include the project where the Epics are created. Or the filter may limit the Issue Types being included. Or there may be some other criteria in the filter that results in the Epics not being included because they don't match the criteria.

This is the button that should let you get to the board configuration, if you have sufficient permissions.

Screen Shot 2022-10-24 at 1.30.46 PM.png

You should be able to click on that button, then select Configure. A new page should display with a variety of options as shown in this page:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirasoftwareserver/configuring-a-board-938845252.html

Select the General option. On that screen there should be a section with the heading "Filter". That is the information we need to see.

We also need you to confirm that you don't have of the Quick Filters activated when you are viewing the board and no Epics are displayed.

Thank you, Trudy! I took a look and still got confused. It's not resolved, but I got pulled and slammed on a couple things. I want to thank you for taking the time to help me through this issue. I am going to come back to it on Monday.
