Experiencing Slow Performance in Jira Cloud: Long Load Times for Issues and Boards

Asier Vadillo June 17, 2025

I'm experiencing significant performance issues with my Jira Cloud instance. The system has become noticeably slow, with extended loading times across various functions.

Specific issues I'm experiencing:

  • Issue viewing: Takes between 1-4 seconds to load a single issue
  • Issue board loading: Similar delays of 4-7 seconds
  • Tab switching: Consistently slow response time (1-7 seconds) when navigating between tabs or pages

These delays are affecting team productivity, as we spend considerable time waiting for screens to load throughout the day.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on:

  • Potential causes for this slowdown in Jira Cloud
  • Troubleshooting steps to identify bottlenecks
  • Recommended optimizations or configurations to improve performance
  • Whether these load times are considered normal for Jira Cloud

Has anyone else experienced similar performance issues? What solutions worked for you?

Thank you for your help!

Hello @Asier Vadillo

Currently there is an active incident going on: https://jira-software.status.atlassian.com/

Even if it's for child issues, it reflects on other issues as well, which is connected to boards as well.

Only troubleshooting you can try is to clear cache, start in incognito. If it's still the same, we would need to wait for Atlassian to solve this issue.

Thanks for the reply!

I'd like to clarify that the performance issues I'm experiencing are not limited to today or related to the current incident.

I've already tried clearing cache and using incognito mode, but the performance issues remain. Since this appears to be a general, ongoing problem rather than a temporary incident, I'm wondering if there are other potential solutions or optimizations that could help improve the performance of our Jira Cloud instance.

Performance can be caused by some of the things such as:

  • Too many Automations
  • Complex workflows
  • Forge apps that can be using data such as issues, boards and etc - if you have any installed of course: https://www.forge-apps.com/ - this site shows all of the apps created by Forge
  • overloaded dashboards
  • The size of attachments

These are some of the things that may cause the reduced performance.

The number of Automations may be something to consider yeah.
In regards to the Forge apps, we only use 4-5 apps so I don't think it is the reason for the reduced performance.
I will investigate more.
Thanks for the help!

Hi again @Nikola Perisic

Could the number of issues in a project be a possible reason for the reduced performance?

Atlassian rekommends to use filters to narrow searches if the project contains more than 5000 work items to speed up performance but there is no actual limit for the number of work Items that can be contained in a project

In my experience you will see performance issues way before that especially when it comes to board filters. It is always a good practice to narrow down the searches to speed things up.

Agreed with that, even some trivial things like VPN and slow internet connection can be a factor.
