Globally managed field

I would like to have a global field that will be set in one place and and be used in a specific project.

That means that this value will be common across the board.

I saw the following article.

Create and manage global fields | Jira Product Discovery | Atlassian Support

I tried following it but for the life of me I cannot set the field or understand how to use that.

Can anyone shad a light or point to someplace that really explains how to do that?

Thanks

Hi @Dd,

This article is specific to Jira Product Discovery (JPD), which is a very specific Jira app for product teams. You did not tag your question as related to JPD, but to Jira Cloud standard.

If you are not using JPD, this article is not relevant - if you want to create a custom field that you want to use across multiple projects, refer to the articles and tips we shared in your related question from earlier today

If you need additional assistance, do check what type of project and what Jira app you are actually using and let us know where you are stuck exactly.

Hope this helps!

You probably touched all the issues I have :-)

I use JIRA cloud.

I know how to create a custom field that is used in all tickets but then I have to set it for each and every ticket.

I was looking for something global that I can use across all tickets when I set it once.

That JPD seemed like a solution, but it wasn't clear to me that it's not exposed to the JIRA cloud,

Is there a way to create a GOLBAL VARIABLE for Jira cloud that I can change it (through automation) from time-to-time and use it to set a specific custom field that should get that value when needed.

Hopefully, that's clearer...

BTW - where do I tag the question?

Hello @Dd

I have a couple of questions to clarify your need.

When you change this variable, do you want that to cause an update to pre-existing issues?

What sort of value do you need the variable to hold?

What type of Custom Field will you be setting based on that variable?

How do you intend to actually set the field based on the variable? Through a workflow? Through an Automation rule? Through functionality provided by a third party app?

Jira doesn't have the concept of a Global Variable. But when we have a better understanding of how you intend to use that value, we may be able to suggest a solution.
