Has anyone been able to successfully migrate on Jira On-Prem to Jira Cloud with cloud existing data?

Ulises J Perez July 15, 2019

I have SHIB enabled on both On-Prem (v7.13.0) and Cloud and I have data on both instances (no next-gen projects).  I would like to be able to migrate the Projects from On-Prem to Cloud so that I may be able to decommission our On-Prem instance.  Has anyone been able to do successfully on their own and/or are there any third party add-dons that can do this?

Hello Ulises,

I'm glad to inform you that our Atlassian development team is currently working in a JIRA import Client that will allow the import of single projects to JIRA Cloud from other JIRA Cloud or Server instances. Check their last update (July, 2019) in the feature request below:

- Provide support for "Single Project" migration from Jira Server to Cloud

Feel free to vote and watch the suggestion to increase its priority and also receive notifications about any updates.

That being said, we understand how this lack might be impacting your business. Please, take a look at the feedback and workaround provided in the feature request above in the comments section, maybe you can find some useful (Not perfect) solution for your current scenario.

Regards,

Petterson Gonçalves - Atlassian Team

Our Server instance was fairly small and mostly used for budget tracking....we exported it all to CSV and imported it back into Cloud relatively easily...had some hiccups around date formatting and some missing Custom fields ....outside of that we didnt see any issues.

Thanks Shawn.  Our On-Prem instance has 16872 issues, so it's quite large and our Cloud has 2,670 issues.  From what I understand, the Cloud does not have the functionality of simply importing projects from Server and that you would only be able to do a restore which I can't do because I have data.  Still, do you mind sharing the steps you took?

I have already tried exporting both On-prem and Cloud to a third instance unsuccessfully with Atlassian support.

Thanks.

1. Recreate Project A from Server in Cloud server Manally

2. OnPrem- Advanced Search > Query ALL tickets for Project A

3. Export query w/ All fields to CSV file

4. Use Issue import function in Cloud backend and import all tickets into the Project A

5. Repeat steps for each additional project

Thanks Shawn, I have 144 projects, so looks like I got my work cutout.  Appreciate the help!

Ouch, that is one heavy migration. Hopefully you got some projects you can Archive/decommission

We have lots of custom fields, any ideas on importing those?  After importing and not being able to map custom fields, the issues don't export with the custom fields therefore data is missing.  Any thoughts or recommendations on importing the custom fields?  Thanks.

You have to recreate the custom field in your Cloud instance and then do the migration for custom fields
