Hierarchy level - Issue type (epic, base and sub-task)

Herve Olibo July 13, 2022

Hello all,

I am trying to set up a hierarchy view. The problem is, that some of the issues were already set as base (issue type) and I would like to set them as sub-tasks type.

Is there a way to do it?

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Not directly (because you'd have to edit every issue already of that type)

You have to rename or delete the issue types you've got at one level and create new ones with the right names at the right level.

Thanks! Therefore, I would need to create new links , right?

There are around 200 issues that needs to be moved and I do not want to lose any information during the process

Yes, that's what the required edits would be.

Is there not a way to move 200 issues from standard type to sub-task type without impacting on the links?

Do you thing that if we get Jira Premium and with its Advanced roadmap tool, we can create our own hierarchy and therefore no need to to change that?

No, you have to edit the issues.

If you convert a sub-task to a base issue type, then you lose the parent link and may want to think about adding Epic limks to it.  If you're going the other way, converting issues to sub-tasks, you're going to need to tell Jira which parent you want for each sub-task.

Note that editing the issue type name itself has no effect on the issues.

If you go for Advanced Roadmaps, then you can create layers above Epic, but the basic Epic -> Issue -> Subtask does not change.

Hello @Herve Olibo

Welcome to the community!!

This is possible using the Bulk Change option, but that requires elevated privileges. The documentation for the same is available here.

Also, you need to ensure that both issue types follow the workflow in order to change them through the bulk change option. If the workflows are different, then the bulk change option is not feasible.

For such scenarios, you will need to manually update the issue type. This can be done by opening the issue and then clicking on the issue icon next to the issue key.

This will take you to a series of steps asking for details like the parent issues, status etc.

Kindly accept the answer if this helps resolve the scenario.

Regards,
