Hello community 😃👋🏻
When I recently wanted to add a board to a Scrum project (the basic is classic, not next-gen, because I need several of the features of the classic type), I had the possibilities to either use a board of an existing project, or create an „empty“ board (not talking about the third option, the JQL One).
So I chose the existing project and was totally confused when it showed all ongoing sprints etc. - I just wanted an “empty” board (with all the pre-settings of the already existing project).
When I chose an “empty” board, I created a completely new project - with completely new settings - what can I do?
And although I guessed that this topic should’ve been brought up somewhere in the community, I didn’t find it.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Sebastian
Hi Sebastian - Usually just copy and existing board that has the setup that I want. Then I change the underlying filter for the issues I want to see.
Hey John,
once again thanks for the quick and helpful answer. What I don't get here: If I replicate (in other terms: copy) a board, it'll have all the backlog items on it, the board its copied from has on it, right? But that clearly will be problematic regarding my reports and my output in Portfolio for Jira. Or am I missing something? Only because I set a filter doesn't mean that the data isn't there, right?
Thanks again - and looking forward for your next reply :-)
Sebastian

The items (i.e. issues) on a board are based on the filter - nothing else. So if you copy a board, it will copy it with the existing filter. All you need to do is edit the board by going to Board Settings and change out the filter for the board. The board will now show the issues that your new filter provides.
The board is nothing more than a view of the issues in the database. You can even delete a board and it has NO effect on the issues in the system. So your reports are really based on filters and the database and not the board itself.
I hope that makes sense and helps!

Oh wow, I fell stupid now.
Thank you for this extensive description @John Funk , now I (hope I) got it (or rather: now I know. I really didn't know that before).

Can I classify one of my topics as solved? Because it is solved right now thanks to John :-)

@John Funk, since you seemed to be the holy grail so far for all my questions: Your explanations perfectly helped for setting up my Scrum boards, which already makes me a very happy man ;-)
But do you coincidentally also know if it's possible to apply those kind of settings/options to boards of Classic Business Project Management template projects? I haven't found any option here to make any changes to the board here.
Thanks (AGAIN) in advance for your help,
Sebastian

Hi Sebastian - Thank you so much for all of the kind words. :-) I am glad I have been able to help you some.
Business projects are very limited. I never use them as I really don't see any advantage that they give. I pretty much always use Classic projects or Jira Service Desk projects because they are the ones that I can customize/modify the most.
So, I think the quick answer is no, you can't make those same changes to a Business project board.
If you have a lot of issues on that project, you can create a new Classic project and then Move all of the issues from the Business project to the new Classic project. Otherwise you will be limited.

@John Funk Credit where credit is due ;-)
Maybe I haven't pointed out which two project types we're actually using.
When we start a new project - after some insuccessful testing/usage of the next-gen projects (as you might remember) - we always start with "classic project".
The next step is to click on "change template" (or re-use the prviously chosen project - don't know why it's suggesting a Kanban board here, since we never used one).
Then we either choose the classic (that was the classic I was referring to) template "Project Management" in the "Business" section (using the scheme of a default project we built), or we go to the "Software" section and choose a "Scrum" project there (again, with a preconfigured default project as template).
If I understand you correctly, you are referring to the classic template "Project Management" of the "Business" sections - but using this template, I can't make ANY changes regarding the board.
Or did I misunderstand you at a certain point?
Thanks (again and again) for your help and for any further suggestions,
Sebastian

I am referring to ALL types under the Business project template. You will have the same problems no matter which one you use.
I always use Software template and then Kanban. You might not really be following the Kanban framework but that doesn't really matter with the board. It will allow you to do what you want. Or you can easily change it. That's not the same with the Business templates.

Ok, then I'll try this and design a Kanban board in the way I'd like the business project to function :-D
Thanks again and have a nice weekend :-)

I just want an empty Board, with nothing in it. As I don't have any stories or epics yet. I want to see them fall in. If I use any filter that was used before its going to pick up all the stuff in the other project, that I'm basing my Board on.
I don't understand why I need to create a filter. I don't have any issues in my board yet to filter on. I want to decide that later.
Again, How do I create an empty JIRA Board please.
Or tell me how to create a filter this DUMMY filter, that I don't need right now for my board.
Thank you.
