How can I hide a project type in JIRA Create Project window?

Aaron Ko July 8, 2018

Hi, this question was asked, but the answers were NOT very clear.

In "Create Project", we have 3 sections: Software, Service Desk, Business.

We are beginning testing of "JIRA Service Desk", but for now, we do NOT want to show the "IT Service Desk" create project type, in order to reduce confusion.

Explicitly, how can I remove the "IT Service Desk" project type from the "Create Project" window?

Thank you.

Disable the Service Desk application.

The reason the project type is there is to allow your administrators to use it.  There's no point in disabling something you want to use.

This question also made me think that you might have some problems with the way you're using Jira.

  • You should not be testing in a system where it matters.  If you're not ready to start creating Service Desk projects in production, then you should not have added Service Desk to it.  It should be in a test system where it does not matter if someone uses it by mistake
  • Why can't you just tell your administrators not to use it?  You should only have a 3-4 (ok, maybe 10 if you're a huge organisation), and you should be able to trust them to listen to you in your regular admin meetings.

Nic, thanks for the answer.  I am the admin (or the super admin) as we call it.  Yes, observation is correct, we are NOT using JIRA the right away.  To undo the "bad way" would take months if not longer.  Thus we are trying to adjust on the fly, the disabling of the "IT Service Desk" is just a workaround option, due to a conflict of existing custom fields, which we can not modify/delete (for internal reasons), thus I want to avoid using the "IT Service Desk" project, and only use the other 2 projects,  "Basic" and "customer service" as part of JSD.   It's all just part of a workaround rather than a clean JSD strategy.
