How can I make Remaining Estimate automatically sum up at the Epic level?

Michaela Hovmand February 10, 2023

Hello Atlassian Community, I'm hoping to get some help creating a rule that can automatically sum up Remaining Estimate at the Epic level, every time the Remaining Estimate is adjusted for its' child issues (task/user story/bug).

Through the help of other threads here, I have succeeded in creating a rule that allows me to automatically sum up Time Spent for the Time Tracking field. However, I'm not having much luck figuring out how to do the same for the Remaining Estimate.

For reference, the following screenshot shows the rule for summarising Time Spent that does work:

Any suggestions on how to also sum up Remaning Estimate automatically?

Hello @Michaela Hovmand and hello @Amed Moreno

I am trying to solve the same problem as Michaela. So I am very interested to know if you have found a solution.

It would help me a lot if you could describe the rule.

Kind Regards
René

Hello @Rene.Wouters

Unfortunately, I never found a way of doing this that worked properly.

Hi Michaela,

  • Add extra step "Edit Issue" below "then: Log Work"
  • Choose field "Remaining Estimate"
  • And set value to {{triggerIssue.fields.timetracking.remainingEstimate}}

See below screenshot:

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards,

Amed

Thank you so much for your reply @Amed Moreno

I thought this worked at first, but upon testing with the changes you suggested, it seems to only edit Remaining Estimate for the given Epic once (the first time). Meaning that when I edit the Remaining Estimate for a child issue it will only edit the Remaining Estimate the first time (and only once) for the Epic. It still does not sum up Remaining Estimates for the Epic from the subsequent edits to the child Issues Remaining Estimates that I do. Difficult to explain, but hope that made sense?

@Michaela Hovmand

Hi Michaela,

I see what you mean.  So all you need if for remaining estimate to update on the epic?  Not necessarily the time spent (on the epic level)?

Or do you need both to update?

Kind Regards,

Amed

Hello again @Amed Moreno

Yes, so for every Epic I have I would like to see the total sum of both Time Spent and Remaining Estimate. The sum should come from all a given Epic's child issues and update automatically whenever time is logged.

I'll try to give an example. I have an Epic with two child issues and I have logged 10 hours of Time Spent and 20 hours Remaining Estimate on each of them. Now I would like the Epic to update with the calculated sum from the logged hours of its' child issues. So in this instance, the Epic should show 20 hours in Time Spent and 40 hours in Remaining Estimate.

Best Regards
