How can I use Automation to set Assignee?

Hello all,

First, I'm super excited about Atlassian's acquisition of Automation for Jira.

Question:

How can I set an issue's assignee to a value from a user picker field?

Context:

1. Someone submits a ticket; one of the required fields is a user picker
2. After submission, ticket status changes to X
3. Automation:
   1. When a ticket's status becomes X
      1. Edit issue
      2. Field = Assignee
      3. Value = my problem

I was expecting to see some sort of option to set the Assignee's value with another field's value, namely the value from the User Picker field filled out when first submitting the ticket. 

Any insight on achieving this is greatly appreciated.

Hi Andrew,

If I understand you correctly, you want to set the Assignee field = to the value of a custom user picker field when the value in the custom field changes. Correct?

If so, you create a rule for Field value changed. 

Then you monitor the custom field for all of the issue operations.

Then New Action - Edit issue.

Choose the Assignee field.

Click the 3 dots to the right of the Assignee field after you have selected it. Then choose Copy from...

It will say Copy Assignee from Current issue. Click on that information which will give you a pop up. Change the Field to copy value from to use your custom user picker field.

Sort of! When the status of a transition changes, I want to set the value of the Assignee field to the same value in a custom user picker field.

Regardless, the directions you provided are what I want to accomplish. However, I don't see the ability to Copy from...

It looks like you are doing an If Then condition - you just need a regular condition. Can you do a screen shot of what comes before that?

Ah, it looks like you are doing the automation through the project. I was referring to the Automation For Jira tool - probably available through the Marketplace. It is now free to use.

D'oh!! You're right. 

I misunderstood that they distributed it as an app.

Anyway, I found Automation for Jira and successfully followed your original steps.
