How can my initiatives timeline in my "plan" to be adjusted when I move the epics timeline

Hi there,

I am using the Jira "plan" feature for my shared roadmap across teams. As you guys all know often timelines change and therefore me & other teams adjust the timeline of epics. However every time we do, the initiative timeline (under which those epics live) does not adjust automatically and thus this timeline is constantly outdated and has to be moved manually. (see also screenshot)

Is there a way that if I move the timeline of an epic, that the initiative timeline will be adjusted automatically?

Hi @lisa,

Great to see you out here in the Community again! According to the support documentation it is possible to have your dates roll up automatically from child to parent issues when you consider the following:

  • Roll up dates is enabled in view settings
  • The dates of your parent issues are not manually set
  • Your parent issues (in your case initiatives) are not assigned to a sprint

If those are all true, then the dates of your initiatives should get updated in line with the Epics underneath.

Have a good read through the article, as there's a lot of scenarios described there that may impact the behaviour.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Walter

  1. Unsure, see screenshot - Roll up dates is enabled in view settings
  2. Unsure - I dragged the timeline view along. How can I set this differently? The dates of your parent issues are not manually set
  3. Check - Your parent issues (in your case initiatives) are not assigned to a sprint

Hey @lisa,

If you dragged the timeline along for an initiative, that updates the dates for that initiative. So I am quite sure they are actually filled out.

You can view them in your plan by adding them under fields. By clicking the Fields link (just above the status and team columns in your screenshot) you will be able to add the start en due date fields to your screen, so you can check. Rolled up dates will show in italic and with an arrow in front of them, where dates you filled out manually will be shown in a regular font (similar as what you can see with your teams).
