How do I apply specific customized fields to cards in only one board within my project?

lindsay.barrett September 16, 2020

I have a project with 3 boards and have custom fields. I want those custom fields applied to cards in one board and not all three.

I have a feature request board in my overall Product project. I also have a general product board and a design board. I don't want the custom fields I created for the FR issue type to appear on the task or story issue on the design board and the story issue on the general product board. I'd prefer to have just the general fields. Hi Lindsay, welcome to the Community. So fields are associated to issues and issue screens not Boards. Now you can change what is displayed on the cards in a board or the detailed issue view that is displayed in the side bar when clicking on a card in a board. Can you add more detail on your specific goal?

I want the board I manage to have the custom fields I created and the other boards to have the default fields. How do we get the other board's generics field back?

Hi @lindsay.barrett It's not possible to separate the boards by custom fields. As @Jack Brickey mentioned screens are associated with projects and not specific to boards. Can you let us know how your boards are currently separated? Do you have those custom fields on a single issue type (E.g. story) ?

To reiterate, custom fields are associated with issues and not with boards specifically. So for example, if you have issue A and that issue is displayed on multiple boards and that issue has custom fields 1,2,3,4 configured to display on the issue detail screen then they will display n that screen regardless of where you access that screen. With that said, could you please capture a screenshot and share here of exactly where you’re saying of custom build that you don’t want to see?

If you have different issue types then you can apply different screen and with different screens you can display different fields. So if the boards will have different issuetypes then you can achieve your goal.

Do I have to set up a separate screen for each board?

Screens are not associated to boards. You can create a screen for a specific issue tight. Each screen can display specific custom fields.

Okay, but that doesn't help me accomplish what I need to do. How do I set up a screen? Do I need to go back and delete my custom fields and only apply them to screen? I'm sorry, but I'm new to this and this seems overly complicated.

Sorry Lindsay, I just assumed you were aware of screens and how to configure. You do not need to delete any custom fields. Basically, you can create screens and associate to an issuetype in a project here - project settings > Screens. In there you can either edit the current screen scheme or associate a new scheme under the Actions button (upper right). In the screen page you will see "this project uses # screen configurations" where # is the number of screen configurations you have. You might have a single config that lists all issuetypes. Basically this is where you could, if desired create unique screen per issuetype. You will really want to review the docs to understand the process.

I agree the areas of screens and screen schemes can be a bit overwhelming. One of the reasons Next-gen was introduced.

I highly recommend going thru the documentation from Atlassian. It is hard for me to say where to start because I'm not sure what you are already familiar with. However, here are my recommendations:
