How do I delete a field from card layout (backlog) on classic project?

Matt Stephens October 16, 2020

I added a field (labels) to a classic project backlog and that worked fine as I expected.  But now I can't get rid of it - when I go back to the board settings it doesn't show Labels as being part of the backlog card layout.  I can add it again, but even then if I immediately remove it before going back to the backlog, the field is still showing.

Note I own the instance, project, board etc with full admin permissions.

Matt,

In order to configure this, you'll need to make use of the new Issue Layout feature.

Go to your project settings > Issue Layout. From there, click on Edit Layout for each issue type and then pull the Lables field down into the Hide when Empty section.

This will still make it show when the Label field is populated, but it'll be hidden if the Labels field is empty.

More documentation can be found here.

Hi Kian,

Thanks for answering but that's not the problem I have.  The problem I have is:

1. I went to Board Settings / Card Layout and added Labels under Backlog

2. Now I (correctly) see Labels as a field on the Backlog view (eg: against every issue in the list)

3. Now I go back to Board Settings / Card Layout - but under Backlog it doesn't show that Labels is included, so there is no way to remove it.  All it shows there is '[CHART] Date of first response' whatever that even is?!?

(Note, I tried adding it there and immediately removing it, and that doesn't do anything either)

Anyway... just in case your solution might still work I tried it, and that doesn't work either!

1. Went to Project settings / issue layout and edit layout for story.

2. Pull Labels into the 'hide when empty' section

3. It doesn't save - when I exit that page nothing has changed, and when I return to that settings page labels is still in the normal section.  So pulling it down to hide when empty doesn't work.

Thanks for the clarification Matt, I thought for some reason that you were looking at the detail view!

That being said,I just want to make sure we are on the same page.

This is what I see on my backlog: Note, the label has been set for this issue.

My board settings look like this.

Are you saying that labels continue to show on the on the backlog, even though you cannot  see Labels on your board settings?

Thanks,

Kian

Hi Kian.

Ok, so it turns out this is user error!  Somehow the [CHART] Date... item was already added (I probably clicked the add by accident) and that's what was showing as 'empty' on the backlog view.  So when I then removed Label, I thought it was still showing, but actually it's that [CHART] field.

So... original issue solved!  User error!
