How do I export Jira search to a hard file?

I'm able to export the results of a search (e.g. a CSV file), but where does it put the file it generates?  In other words, I do a the export, but it doesn't ask me for where I want to put the file or what I would like to name it, and it accepts my command to export, but nothing happens.  I want to import the data and use it into another application, but I can't find where it went.  Very frustrating!  . . .
