Hi,
I have a custom field associated to just one screen. The field name is Severity for the issuetype Bug. This field is not searchable and sortable for some reason. I do not find any option to turn this on. I was able to make it 'Required' but I am not able to make it searchable. Please help.

What searcher have you selected for it? (Admin -> Issues -> Custom fields -> Your field -> Edit)
What type of custom field is it?

It is a dropdown field. Select List (Single choice).
