How do I turn off email notifications for Jira?

That's basically it--I just signed up for Jira, and every project I'm tagged on gives me email updates for any tiny, little thing. I'm inundated already. 

How do I turn off email notifications???

If you are an administrator, this can be done with notification schemes. If not, you can ask your administrator for new notification scheme or create a rule for emails that comes from jira account.

So basically anyone can add me to their team and send spam emails via Jira. And there is no way for me to disable that rather than blocking Jira emails in my mailbox? Looks like not very solid software.
