Welcome @Emma Wormleighton

  • Make sure that sub-task issue type is included in your issue type scheme
  • When Story is created, click on it and click on Add then select Add sub-task

Refering to the second question, when you create the Story, when you view it, there needs to be an Add button below the description field. Clicking on it shows the Add sub-task, if sub-task issue type was previously was added to the project.

The issue type scheme can be found when you click on three dots right from the project, selecting Project settings. From there you want to go to Issues (now can be named Work items) - you need to look for Types. From there you will see the issue type scheme.

Hello @Emma Wormleighton

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

You said you have 2 boards. Do these two boards reference issues in the same project or different projects?

You said that you have a Story issue where you can't create a subtask. To create a subtask in an issue you need to look for this option while viewing the issue:

Is that option present or missing?

The Story issue where you are having this problem is contained in a Jira Project. What is the Type of the Jira project? Go to the View All Projects page under the Projects menu. Find the project in the list of projects. What does it say in the Type column?

There are two project customization architectures in Jira - Company Managed and Team Managed. The way to add an issue type to a project depends on which type of customization architecture applies to the project.

If it is a Team Managed project you would

  1. go to Project Settings for that project.
  2. click on Work Types
  3. Observe up to three layers of issue types separated by gray lines.

This is the area you would go to for a Team Manged project to add an issue type.

If it is a Company Managed project you would

  1. go to project settings for that project
  2. click on Work Items, then Types, which will display the list of available work items types for the project.

If you don't see a item with the "SUB-TASK" lozenge next to it, then there are no issue types that are subtasks. You can add one to the scheme by clicking the Actions button in the upper right corner and selecting Edit Issue Types.

That takes you to a screen where you can drag available issue types from a list on the right to the grouping for the project's issue type scheme on the left. You then have to click the Save button at the bottom.

However, there may be additional changes needed.

You may not get the workflow you expect associated to the issue type you've added. You may not get the screen you expect associated to the issue type you've added. You may not get the fields you expect associated to the issue type you've added. All those associations are handled by other Schemes.
