There is this link:
With these steps:
To complete an epic:
Open the Epics Panel on the left
Click the drop-down arrow for your epic, and select Mark as Done.
But the "team" version no longer supports this process and I see the roadmap will update (remove) a closed epic but there does not seem to be a way to remove the closed epic from the backlog epic list.
I have the same exactly issue.
I have marked as done all the epics, but they still appear on the list of epic link.
Hi @Chris Figy,
Simply update the actual epic's status to Done (or an equivalent green status). That should make it disappear from the panel automagically.
Hope this helps!

Hi Walter,
I don't see that happening except for the roadmap. Backlog still lists the epic even though it is Done (green status) and resolution is Done as well.
Thanks

Hi @Chris Figy,
I just tested it myself in a test instance I have and it did work. I did actively change the status of my Epic to done. I am totally making assumptions here, but maybe if you could reopen the epic and close it again, that might help?
This is all related to a couple of recent changes, of which a few are described in this community article. Right there it also mentions that all child issues must be done as well before the epic disappears from the Epic panel. Maybe that is another explanation.

This affects Team-Managed projects too. Sadly, I have an epic in a Done status (literally, "Done"), with Resolution of "Done", and all child tasks are in a Done status Category, I have "Show closed epics" unticked, and yet the epic still appears when using the Epic Link field on an issue.
The project the epic lives in is different to the project the issue lives in, so does not appear in the Epics list in the project's scrum board, and honestly, that shouldn't matter because many teams use Kanban boards instead, which don't have that Epic list.
This is a Jira bug or there's a secret Atlassian need to share to stop Done epics appearing in the Epic Link field of task level issues.

I agree and still do not understand how a big thing like this one is not getting any resolution..

I found a work-around (through another thread I can't find today) here - https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Software-questions/How-to-hide-done-closed-epics-from-the-Epics-Link-field-on-tasks/qaq-p/2294836#M253868

A simple work around is available through A4J as described here - https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Software-questions/How-to-hide-done-closed-epics-from-the-Epics-Link-field-on-tasks/qaq-p/2294836#M253868

I am having this issue also. I can hide epics from the backlog view my marking the status as done. However, those epics continue to show in the list of epics that comes up when assigning an issue to an epic.
I tried adding a field called "Epic Status" to the epic issue from a suggestion I saw on a different thread. This did not change the behavior of the epic dropdown list.
Even having an option with the epic dropdown list to show only open epics would be super helpful as my list of Epics is growing steadily, and making managing issues troublesome.
