How to add AutoComplete/Search function into a Custom Field <Select List (multiple choices)>?

I am currently using JIRA Cloud, and I understand that this can be achieved in JIRA Server using javascripts.

I am wondering is there any other way for JIRA Cloud users to have a search/autocomplete feature for a custom field that have multiple selections?

Imagine having 100 values in a multiple choice custom field with only wildcard search using keyboard is a bit troublesome no?

Hi Jeff,

I understand that you have a multi select custom field and want to be able to have an auto complete option for users that might start to type out a potential value in that field.

We are tracking this over in JRACLOUD-23013.  While this is a long standing feature request, I was looking into this and found that in some cases this is already in play in Jira Cloud today.

If your Jira Cloud site is already using the new issue view, this appears to be already be possible.  Although I found that if I fell back to the old issue view temporarily, that when looking at the same issue this it was not possible to type in any value to try to autocomplete that field in the old view.

I found that I was able to create a multi-select type custom field in both company managed and team managed projects (field type is called Dropdown in team managed).  In the new issue view I found this already appears possible.  However I did not test will 100 possible values to the field itself, so perhaps there is something else in play here specific to your environment or this specific field type.

I would be interested to learn more here so that we can understand why this might not be working the way you want here in your environment.  Are you using the new issue view?

Hi Andy,

Yes I am using new issue view, and many of my users are giving me feedback that the custom multiple choice is very troublesome to look for a value without the autocomplete like the field (Assignee/Reporter). I am aware that I can search when Editing ticket. But during ticket creation we can only use wildcard search which is not ideal.

Hello @Jeff Boon,

Allow me to step in while Andy is out of office.

Thank you for sharing the details.

On the new issue view, it’s possible to search for the values on a multiple-choice custom field as Andy mentioned.

The create issue screen is still on the old view, that’s why it shows only a list and it’s not possible to search for the values on Select Lists custom fields.

Fortunately, this is going to change between December and January and the new issue view will also be applied to the create issue screen.

A quick update. We have completed our Beta testing of the new Issue Create modal and the results have been very positive. We are now planning to roll out the new modal to all customers starting December 2021 through January 2022. The new Issue Create modal will be consistent with the Issue View modal in terms of markdown support.

For now, we must wait for the feature to be rolled out in the next two months, and then it will be possible to use the autocomplete when creating new issues.

Please, watch the ticket mentioned above to receive updates from our product managers.

Kind regards,
Angélica

What about the transition screens ? Maybe it's time to update these as well. Multi-select fields still look like the old sad way, a list of values to ctrl+select.
